I have to say that I liked Mr. Knight more in the pilot because he almost set himself up as Ralph's foil...much as Carlisle would become Bill's foil. I think Knight sees Ralph as a reflection of his class by coming in late and keeping company with drunks. In fact, he might have put him in there because he did not consider him useful enough for anything else. Over time, he became the domineering principal that fired Ma Detweiler in DREAMS and kept Ralph from tenure in 30 SECONDS OVER LITTLE TOKYO, so he became more of a bad guy rather than someone Ralph could interact with in the way Carlisle was developed. I liked the character, but overall, I think he was best as the Vice Principal because that meant he was watching Ralph and his kids more closely because of his role as school disciplinarian.
