I have to say that I really enjoyed the performance of William Lucking here. Most people would say his best role was in the A-TEAM playing the hapless Colonel Lynch, but I think he brought a masterful presence to this role. The way he cowed Bill just by using his name was priceless. Granted, he got snowballed in the end, but his presence and demeanor were amazing for a man who would later play the ultimate imbecile of the U.S. Army.

I do too. That shows just how respected he is. Even Palmer Bradshaw did not get that respect from Bill...and HE was the rising star in the FBI. For all the rivalries between the intelligence agencies, you have to respect the way Bill backs down in front of him and shows him that respect. Even if he does go out and get the goods later, it was a hell of a thing to see Bill back down...big brass or not. Neat new concept that Bill did not display much.

Bill was smart enough to recognize that Klein earned his position, whereas Palmer was handed it through connections.
Bill respected people who worked hard, and were successful because of it. He really didn't care much for elites and those who were born into money or power.

Bill respected people who worked hard, and were successful because of it. He really didn't care much for elites and those who were born into money or power. To SOME degree. You have to admit that Bill and Carlisle were not buddies and it seemed that Bill did not respect him at all. And yet, we never get the impression that Carlisle does NOT work hard...he just has a different work ethic and sense of responsibility than Maxwell. I agree that Bill recognized Klein as the top dog and the reasons for it were sound...it is just that he does not ALWAYS recognize that fact.

Carlisle inherited his position from his Twin. You know, the one who went crazy and saw that guy flying around.

Still...they both had to be SOMEWHAT qualified to take the position and to do so after ONE of them was committed.

I just had a thought... what if instead of KLEIN, it had been ROBINSON?
By that year, Kelly would've been older, with The Department about as long as Bill would've been in the FBI...
Sorry, going off on a tangent here (so what else is new?)
I like Klein's character, and I was shocked but pleased when Bill capitulated. If this guy's such a mucky-muck in the CIA, I could see Bill doing that. I think y'all are right, though, comparing Bradshaw with Klein. I get the impression Klein truly earned his high position, instead of being handed it to him like little Palmer was.

The other problem with Palmer was that he really didn't even seem to WANT his position. I mean, he was more interested in the opera, the friends in town, and the Underwater Tag Team Water Polo he was playing, or whatever the heck that was...
To try to quote from Blackadder, as he propositions an exiled French Aristocrat eating suspicious looking sausage:
Blackadder: Would you like to earn some money?
Compte de FruFru: *puzzled look* No! I would like other people to earn money... and then give it to me.... like in the good old days back in France...
