Obviously most extras did not have names nor did they have any speaking parts overall. Most of them of course were either one of two places: Background material in Ralph's classes...or background people at the FBI. Why did they need so many people? After all, Ralph's class could have been small, so it would make sense to have the program cut at times. As for Bill, that makes more sense, but he could have had a cubicle in the basement or something...and had to see no one...especially since he worked alone.

I agree.
Just to expand on that, most were in those two places because that's where the scenes typically were. If you had a shot in the FBI Building and/or Whitney High in every epsiode 85% of the time, but a shot in a club (Bottom Line Club or the Stationhouse) only 5% of the time... well....
Speaking of extras, what about all those people in costume at the Magic Show in Carlini? I mean, they could have been regulars reappearing, for all we know!

True...I hadn't thought about Carlini or some of the other places we saw...they could have been continuous extras...especially with all the traffic in CLASSICAL GAS. I understand why they needed them sometimes, but it seems like they probably paid a lot of people to stand around and do nothing all day when they could have easily had the main characters more isolated...even given both of their jobs.
